Mumbai: Man runs maid agency scam, dupes 150 of Rs 37 lakh

MUMBAI: A 32-year-old commerce graduate was arrested by the Powai police for siphoning off Rs 37 lakh from at least 150 people. Vikram Singh, who vanished after promising to provide domestic help and caretakers, was caught in Pune on Saturday after the police accessed his call data records. 

Singh's luck ran out when he duped a bank employee and her friend of Rs 20,000 in March. "Singh has been hiding since he duped the Powai residents. Singh had promised to provide caretakers," said a Powai police officer.

On March 28, Piyul Mukherjee (55) got in touch with Singh after finding his contact details through a local search engine. According to the police complaint, Mukherjee and her friend, Dipti Panchamtiya, were looking for caretakers to stay at their Aurangabad farm house and take care of their pets. "We called a few numbers, but none of them replied. We then received a call from a Nitin Wade who said he can meet our requirements and asked us to deposit Rs 35,000 into a bank account," states Mukherjee.

Panchamtiya brought the amount down to Rs 20,000. After the money was deposited in April, the accused asked the two to visit his office in Hingewadi, Pune. They did not find any office there. Realising they got duped, the two lodged complaint on April 28. Based on that, the accused was caught hiding in Pune.

The police said that Singh started the fake agency after quitting his job at a placement agency three years ago. "Singh is wanted in similar cases that have been filed in MP, Bihar, Bengaluru, and Pune. He was previously arrested by the Bigwewadi, Hingewadi police stations in Pune and the Pune cyber police. He restarted the scam after his release from jail," said the police.
