How nearly a dozen got ‘maid’ by fake agencies

Dr Arup Kumar needed a maid, so he scanned through an online portal, JustDial, and called up one of the placement agencies listed there. Within a few hours, a maid and an employee of the agency were at his house in Greater Kailash of south Delhi. The agent left after the doctor paid Rs 24,500 and completed the documentation.

The family got a shock 15 minutes later when the maid, who had identified herself as Manju, walked out of the house. CCTV footage showed her boarding an auto in which the agent had been waiting. This occurred on August 29. The doctor then lodged a police complaint against Sonam Placement Agency, which was apparently located in C1 Block of Janakpuri. The cops were surprised as days prior to this a businessman’s wife had approached them with a similar complaint stating that she had been duped of Rs 22,000. The maid had run away within 30 minutes of arrival. The complainant had posted an advertisement on a portal called Sulekha and had been contacted by an agent. Here too, the maid had introduced herself as Manju.

In both the incidents, the accused had given their Aadhaar cards as proof of identity. Two FIRs were registered and police analysed the details of the number used by the crooks to call the victims. “A team led by ACP KSN Subuddhi and SHO Vijay Pal Singh tracked the accused to Mukundpur in Nihar Vihar of west Delhi. The woman was identified as Kajal (18) and her male accomplices as Bahadur (22) and Mukesh (25),” DCP (west) Monika Bhardwaj said.

The suspects were found running six fictitious firms in the names of Sonam Placement Agency, Manjula Maid Services, RK Placement, Radha Maid Bureau, Shivam Enterprises Services and RSM Placement Services. Police have seized forms and receipts in the name of these companies apart from the SIM cards and cellphones used in the crime. The accused are learnt to have duped more than a dozen people. Cops have warned people to verify if the agency exists in reality by visiting its office and also get police verification of the maid done before employing them.
